Hi, the above engine has the exhaust and intake reversed. I thought this was only for kerosene engines but this is just specified as a D engine not DK. Also there is no auxilliary fuel tank or switch over valve. Was this normal for early engines? Anyone have any other information? Thanks

That will be a reverse rotation one then. Goes opposite way to a standard D

That's what i thought but there is no Z on the specification plate. the other thought i had was that the cylinder is dated 1939 and therefore not original, i wondered if they may have put a kerosene head on it but kept it on petrol?

No, there is no such thing as a kerosene head, the D either had a vaporizer or, in some earlier cases nothing, check the starting dog, see what way that goes, also if you can find the spec number on the flywheel face that would be a bonus as you could check and make sure your spec plate numbers match, I wouldn't worry too much about the lack of a Z.
If the starting dog is standard clockwise engagement then someone has fitted the carb wrong.
