Lister B Type queries
Hi all, i have a lister B Type with parts that don't seem to tie in with the limited information that i have.
Its a spec 56 serial No 53944 rated 3 1/2 hp. The flywheels stamped B274 and approx 22" diameter and, the crankcase base stamped B344 and approx 7" deep, don't seem to tally with the info i have which states; flywheel 17 1/2" x 3 1/2" all B types part No 2-474 and crankcase base 4" deep part No A344.
Any information as to the reason for these differences would be greatly appreciated. Also any ideas on date of manufacture would be very helpful.
Thanks in advance
Steve

Re: Lister B Type queries
The flywheels could be stamped with the engine number also on the rim, just to confirm they are the correct ones for that engine, I cant really help but do know that A types had 2 versions agricultural and industrial which had different fly wheels I have an industrial A type and it has heavier flywheels.
As you will see in the link number 53300 is 1926 so yours is slightly after that probably 1926 /27

Re: Lister B Type queries
Thanks for the replies Chris and Martin, i will check the flywheels further for any numbers, interesting that they supplied A Types in two variants, quite likely they did the same with B"s". I will contact Doreen Edgington which will hopefully give some clue as to its use.
The engine is in bits at the moment so not sure if pics would help, unless there are any specific parts you would like to see ?
Nice to know its a fairly early engine though, hopefully give it another 93 or 4 years when its done.
Thanks for the help

Stevegood1,
Ihave read my bible and can say that your engine was made between 1925 and 1926, your B was fitted with the flywheels B274 but were later superseded by 474 flywheels, your sub base, A344, is also correct for the flywheels.

Doreen Edgington, her husband David wrote them, there is an advert in Stationary Engine for her and the books. All I collect and show is Listers so have everyone he wrote plus IF do reprints of original manuals.

Yes, the A & B story is very comprehensive, with pretty much every recorded change in specification and parts being listed, together with the date it happened. In fact, it's so detailed, I'm surprised there isn't a record in there of how often the factory cat broke wind!
