ruston & hornsbt pb6 timing
Hi, I am trying to do the timing on my ruston Hornsby pb6 1 1/2 to 2hp. I have another which has timing marks on the fly wheel as in a line and the word spark but this one has no marks on the fly wheel! has anyone any suggestions please for timing it up. many thanks.

Take spark plug out, insert screwdriver in the hole, turn engine over in correct direction until the screwdriver is pushed out, at this point it is at TDC so mark flywheel with chalk or a marker pen, turn back 2 inches and set points to open at that point.

Check valves to make sure it is on the compression stroke and not exhaust stroke. You can normally feel the compression but worth making sure both valves are shut. Not trying to teach anyone to suck eggs but I do know of a certain person who did set the timing to the exhaust and then had trouble getting it to run.

Agree to a point but as the 6PB runs the mag at crankshaft speed it shouldn't make any difference as it has a wasted spark on the exhaust stroke.

Yup, quite a few of these old engines run the mag at crankshaft speed so have a wasted spark. It all depends on the engine.

Thurston is a nice village, nice and handy to Bury. Yes Roydon isn't that far from me.

Thurston, that brings back memories, my Father in Law came from there and and two of my wife's aunts lived there, I'm a Bury boy ish, my parents moved us up from South London when I was thirteen along with my brother and sister. We now live in Bedfordshire.
