Lister D Tidy Up
This is my only engine which i bought in 2014 after discovering such a thing existed at the Llandudno Transport Festival.
I showed it in it's original state at 1000 engine rally later the same year and then it was shown again when i took it to the 90th birthday bash.
Skip to 8:05 to see it and a Domestic... Youtube video
After the birthday bash i decided i didn't enjoy looking at it that much as there was very little original paint left on it... so i began to restore it.
As i started taking bits off i broke the carb and the fuel pipe... not a big problem as i could buy replacements.
The flywheel was removed and sent to an engineers to be reground.
The tank was also sent off to be repaired.... then it had some filler applied to hide some big dents.
With the fly wheel returned i began to paint the engine and parts that i had.... but the waiting time between coats got longer and longer.
I bought a new carb and started to paint it.... but before long 2 years had passed.
In that time i had bought a proper trolley and repainted it light brunswick green as that 's what the engine was going to be.... then sanded and refinished the woodwork.
Then... in the last few weeks while moving things around in my workshed i looked at how much i still had to do... and surprisingly i had 99% finished it... and so i set about finishing it.
The tank got the paint finished as did the straps... before placing the straps on the tank i placed some felt between the two surfaces to prevent scratching.
I had lost one of the plates that cover an oil hole... so made my own and used cardboard as a gasket... i hope to pick one up some time.
Bought a fuel pipe and while i was waiting for that to arrive i put the engine back together.
Fuel pipe arrived and was fitted a few minutes later... sadly the engine was a non runner.... after checking things over i found it had no spark.
For the 2 years, it was left under wraps outside in a poor shelter so i suspected the magneto may need replacing... but i gave it a going over and cleaned the contact points but still nothing.
The following day i looked at it again but this time i turned the flywheel with sand paper between the points and pulled the sandpaper out doing so a few times... i wasn't expecting anything but as i had hold of the ht lead and turned fly wheel to do it again i got shocked which then gave me hope.
A few spins of the handle and it fired right into life at an all mighty speed... happily as i've had it running a few times i've tamed it and and got it to start with one turn of the handle and it runs smooth.
I also made up a wooden pulley as the shank was cut during it's life.
I hope to get to a show later in the year... but next year i plan on travel and having a few weekends away camping and showing at various rallies.

Re: Lister D Tidy Up
Lister D head nut washers
Internal diameter 0.445"
External diameter 0.885"
Thickness 0.1"
This is not a standard size Whitworth washer, which according to my books is
Internal diameter 0.453-0.458"
External diameter 0.995-1.000"
Thickness 0.090-0.092"
I guess you could turn down a standard washer to 0.885" .....

Re: Lister D Tidy Up
I just go through the washer tin until I find some that fit, if I remember right the brass nuts don't have washers fitted on all D types.

Re: Lister D Tidy Up
I though the steel washer acted as a sacrificial anode in the water hopper.....

If that was the case then over time they would dissolve and allow the head nuts to come loose....

Re: Lister D Tidy Up
Yes they have thick flat washers. I usually put some sealer around them as water gets past them (water has very narrow shoulders ) and corrodes the studs.
