Lister D firing problems
Hi, I've always wanted a Lister D & finally managed to get a 'scrapper' which I have completely refurbished so it now looks pretty good. I didn't need many parts so the re-build was fairly simple (& cheap!). However, I'm really struggling with keeping the engine running. It has been starting up ok (once the plug is cleaned) & has been running for approx 5 mins but then eventually stops & seems to be because the plug is sooted up. After repeating this several times yesterday though, it then stopped firing altogether even though there was a spark. Can anyone help please, any ideas very welcome. NB I've got a new D16 spark plug on order so maybe that will help (maybe wishful thinking!). Cheers, Colin.

Re: Lister D firing problems
I don't run my Lister D much so probably not the best person to ask but sooting up plugs is normally sign of over fuelling so maybe needs the mixture adjusting?
Good video on how to start & stop one here - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8McnZM0qte4 adjusting the mixture at about 4 minutes.

Thanks Stuart, I've fiddled around with the mixture & the spring tension on the air intake but without success. Hoping the new spark plug helps.

Hi Colin,
I took the liberty of moving your topic to a more (IMHO) appropriate section.
Best of luck with your project.

Somehow it's over fueling, either float height is too high, theres a notch on the needle that the clips clip into, needle not seating correctly, air valve too tight or mixture screw open to far, mix screw needs to be around a 1/4 turn ish from fully closed, closed as in shut, not against the stop pin.

Thanks Villiers, I'll have a look at all of these over the weekend & report back.

Re: Lister D firing problems
New Champion D16 plug arrived so thought I'd better get it in & tested. I've had it running for approx 1 hour now with the mixture set at approx 1/3 open (any less than this & it dies), Youtube link below. Seems ok although a bit hit'n'miss but the air intake valve is hardly moving (hopefully visible in the video) & if I open it manually, even briefly then the engine dies. The spring I used for the air intake was one I had lying around so maybe it's too strong, but then why doesn't it keep running when I lift the valve manually? Hopefully I'm getting there but would appreciate any thoughts/hints. Many thanks.

Sounds about right for a D running light. You can adjust the spring tension by undoing the nut and winding the threaded part in or out, if it will move, just be careful you don't crush the tube,....

Re: Lister D firing problems
I wound the threaded sleeve out approx 1/4" & the engine stalled so presume it's about right as it was, strange though that the valve hardly moves.... Anyway, I'm part way through building a screw type log splitter which will be driven by this engine so fingers crossedVilliers wrote:You can adjust the spring tension by undoing the nut and winding the threaded part in or out

Re: Lister D firing problems
The valve opens in relation to the amount of work the engine is doing, the harder it's working the more it opens. Good luck with the log splitter, it's been on my "To do" list for a few years but now I'm moving I shan't need one.

If you get it going can I bring some logs down?
