Governor Spring
Can anyone help me as I need to replace the governor spring on my engine. How do I know what length it should be and how much stain should it have on it?

Re: Governor Spring
Well I found a spring and hook laying around so put that on but big problem it won't run right. Since I purchased the engine a few weeks back I've never had the chance to give it a good run for more then a few minutes. So I filled the hopper fitted a new plug I'd purchased and off it went, but not knowing a lot about it I couldn't figure out the marks on the carb, so I just kept moving it around trying it. Thing is it runs like a hit n miss engine just firing every few turns then it'll fire every turn. I took the cover of the mag. and cleaned up the points and set them as there was hardly any gap. started it again and still the same! I took the plug out and spinning it over the points don't always spark. So does anyone think it could be the condenser on it's way out? I found a site that sells a universal one for a Bosch mag. do you think I should go for it? Like I've already stated on the forum I don't know a lot about petrol engines especially the spark side so any help please.

Re: Governor Spring
Stu you need to fit a spring and adjuster on the govner rod ,from under the carb.
you need a hook adjuster and spring same as Lister D there always on E-Bay.
This will sort your running problems out
Clean your mag up annd oil springs

Re: Governor Spring
Thanks Chris. yes I think the hook and spring are of a Lister D, they were in a box of bits I picked up a few years back. As for the mag. to tell the truth I'm frightened to touch it, as I know nothing about them, but I think I will try, and have a camera handy and photo it in stages so I don't mess up.
Wish me luck lol

Re: Governor Spring
Hi Chris many thanks for the offer. Would you mind if I had a little tinker with it myself (only way to learn) then if it's still no better I'll take up your kind offer. Don't worry I won't send a box full of bits and ask you to wave a magic wand over it. and I promise not to go anywhere near it with a hammer.

Re: Governor Spring
Stu thatsno problem its the only way you will learne, make sure everything is clean. Even a smeareof oil on surfaces will stop it contacting.
Have fun
You wouldent be the first to send me a box of bits

Re: Governor Spring
Chris should I time the engine up first before I remove the mag? or could you explain how it's done when I'm replacing it.

Re: Governor Spring
Stu , Do you now how to time the engine ?
If so make sure turn engine over make sure its inleting keep turning until piston is coming up to TDC your flywheel key should be at the bottom [ Looking at it 6 o'clock.
now turn you mag until cam is at its largest point the contacts will be open.
this is were it needs to be, fit mag back on.
I hope this makes sence
